Fairly Strange Tales

Joanna Stokes is a makeup artist, hair stylist, model and all round artistic creator. With industry experience in a wide range of makeup specialisms from theatre to bridal, film to fashion and everything else in between. Alongside her training she has been freelancing for four years and has built up a diverse portfolio working alongside some of the UK's best photographers, directors, models, actors, musicians and more. Additionally, Joanna is also proactive with promoting her personal brand across social media and has her own Etsy store where she sells her bespoke headdresses, masks and more. A strong believer in doing at least one creative thing a day, Joanna's mind is always full to the brim with ideas. This project was the perfect medium to channel all of these attributes into her boldest creation to date.

 

Fairly Strange Tales is a creative imagery based project, derived from personal experience, reflections on today's society and a never ending love of fairy tales. The inner workings of Joanna Stokes's brain have cascaded down into every facet of this work.
Fairy tales are magical ideals that all of us can relate to in one way or another. As a child Joanna was brought up reading numerous fairy tales and learning about interesting and exciting stories from around the world. The six tales and traditions featured are some of her personal favourites, combined with a darker, physchological twist. Joanna's motivation was to combine fairy tales with the ugly truths apparent in today's society. Mental health and addiction are heavily featured throughout, as Joanna is a strong believer in voicing these issues and has faced many throughout her life. 
 

When choosing the theme she wanted to focus on turning personal negative experiences into a positive creative outlet. Proving that as inidividuals we can harness our bad times and turn them into works of art.
Designing and executing each step of the project from set design to video editing, makeup to photography and so much more. Her amazing team worked alongside her to help achieve her aim.
