A beautiful little girl has just woken up, unaware of her surroundings, with hair so long it covers most of her body and wraps around her like a cocoon; her safety blanket...

...she feebly starts to lift herself up off of the lily pad she is laying on, capturing a strong sense of her vulnerability, she looks lost and alone.

Now sitting up and realising how small she is in this big wide world, Thumbelina brings her knees in towards her for comfort.

Showing a tiny bit of courage, she starts to stand up and look around for hope. This is a brief moment before her melancholic thoughts take over again.

Taking in her surroundings has made Thumbelina realise the honest reality of loneliness.

Her beauty helps to cover her despair. Even the prettiest faces can be hiding the saddest stories.
